Sludge dewatering equipment: the key force in sewage treatment

2025/03/17

In the important process of environmental governance today, sludge dewatering equipment plays an indispensable role. With the rapid development of industrialization and urbanization, the large-scale generation of sewage has become an environmental problem that needs to be solved urgently, and sludge dewatering equipment is the core of effectively treating sewage sludge and achieving the dual goals of resource recovery and environmental protection. 1. Common types of sludge dewatering equipment 1. Plate and frame filter press: This is a widely used and long-standing sludge dewatering equipment. It forms a filtration unit by alternating filter plates and filter frames. Under pressure, the sludge is squeezed between the filter cloths, and the water is discharged through the filter cloths, thereby achieving solid-liquid separation. The advantages of the plate and frame filter press are significant. Its structure is relatively simple and easy to operate. It has an excellent dewatering effect on sludge. It can handle sludge of various properties, and the moisture content of the formed mud cake is low, usually down to 60% or even lower. This makes the subsequent disposal of sludge more convenient, whether it is landfill, incineration or resource utilization, it can meet the corresponding requirements. However, it is not perfect. Its filtration process is relatively slow and a working cycle is often long, which limits the processing efficiency to a certain extent. Moreover, the maintenance of filter plates and filter frames is cumbersome, and regular inspection, cleaning and replacement of filter cloth are required to ensure the normal operation of the equipment. 2. Belt filter press: Belt filter press also occupies an important position in the field of sludge dewatering. It is mainly composed of gravity dewatering zone, wedge dewatering zone and pressing dewatering zone. The sludge first enters the gravity dewatering zone, where it removes part of the free water by its own gravity; then it enters the wedge dewatering zone, where the sludge is gradually squeezed and further dehydrated; finally, in the pressing dewatering zone, deep dehydration is achieved through the squeezing action of the upper and lower filter belts. The advantage of the belt filter press is that it has the characteristics of continuous operation, large processing capacity, and can meet the needs of large-scale sewage treatment plants. The equipment has a high degree of automation, is relatively easy to operate, and can effectively reduce labor costs. However, the belt filter press is more sensitive to the properties of sludge. For example, factors such as the solid content and viscosity of the sludge will affect the dewatering effect. Moreover, the service life of the filter belt is limited and needs to be replaced regularly, which also increases the operating cost of the equipment. 3. Centrifugal dewatering machine: The centrifugal dewatering machine uses the centrifugal force generated by high-speed rotation to achieve solid-liquid separation of sludge. After the sludge enters the centrifuge drum, under the strong centrifugal force, the solid particles are thrown to the drum wall to form a mud cake, while the liquid is discharged through the liquid outlet on the drum. The equipment has the advantages of high processing efficiency and small footprint. It can quickly dewater the sludge and is suitable for occasions with high processing time requirements. In addition, the centrifugal dewatering machine has a high degree of automation, which can realize remote monitoring and operation, and is easy to manage and maintain. However, it also has some shortcomings. The purchase cost of the equipment is high, and the technical requirements for operators are relatively high. Professionals are required for debugging and operation management. Moreover, when processing some special sludge, severe wear may occur, which affects the service life of the equipment. 2. Working principle of sludge dewatering equipment Although different types of sludge dewatering equipment differ in structure and working mode, their basic working principle is to separate water from the sludge by applying external force to overcome the binding force between water molecules and solid particles in the sludge. In a plate and frame filter press, pressure is the main driving force. Pressure is applied to the filter plate through a hydraulic system or mechanical device to squeeze out the water in the sludge. The belt filter press makes comprehensive use of multiple forces such as gravity, wedge extrusion and filter belt pressing to gradually dehydrate the sludge. The centrifugal dewatering machine relies on centrifugal force. It uses the powerful centrifugal force field generated by high-speed rotation to make the solid and liquid phases in the sludge have different movement trajectories, thereby achieving the purpose of separation. 3. The Importance of Sludge Dewatering Equipment in Sewage Treatment Sludge dewatering equipment is a key link in the sewage treatment system. Sludge that has not been dehydrated is large in volume and has a high water content. It not only takes up a lot of storage space, but is also difficult to transport and dispose of. Through the treatment of sludge dewatering equipment, the volume of sludge can be greatly reduced and the water content is significantly reduced, which is not only convenient for subsequent sludge disposal, such as reducing the landfill area and the amount of leachate generated during landfilling, improving combustion efficiency and reducing energy consumption during incineration, but also creating conditions for the resource utilization of sludge, such as using dehydrated sludge to make fertilizers, building materials, etc., to achieve resource recycling, reduce the negative impact on the environment, and promote sustainable development. 4. Development trend of sludge dewatering equipment With the increasingly stringent environmental protection requirements and the continuous advancement of science and technology, sludge dewatering equipment is also constantly innovating and developing. In the future, sludge dewatering equipment will develop in the direction of high efficiency, energy saving and environmental protection. On the one hand, the degree of automation of the equipment will be further improved, and the real-time monitoring and adjustment of the equipment operating parameters will be realized through the intelligent control system to improve the processing efficiency and stability. On the other hand, the application of new materials and technologies will continue to emerge, such as the development of more efficient filter cloth materials to improve filtration performance and service life; the use of advanced dehydration processes, such as the combination of thermal drying and mechanical dehydration, will further reduce the moisture content of the mud cake. In addition, the miniaturization and integration of sludge dewatering equipment is also one of the development trends, so as to better adapt to the needs of decentralized sewage treatment and provide more flexible and convenient solutions for sewage treatment facilities of different sizes. As an important part of sewage treatment, sludge dewatering equipment plays a vital role in environmental protection and resource recycling. With the continuous advancement and innovation of technology, it is believed that sludge dewatering equipment will show greater potential in the field of environmental governance in the future and contribute more to building a clean and beautiful ecological environment.
