What is a Disc Stack Centrifuge?

March 21, 2024

Disc stack centrifuges, sometimes called disc bowls or disc stack separators, feature a parallel arrangement of centrifugation spaces provided by a series of conical discs. The disc stack centrifuge can separate two liquid phases or remove solids (often contaminants) from liquids with its extremely high centrifugal force. When these forces act on solids or liquids, the denser ones will gravitate toward the outer edge of the bowl, while the less dense ones will gravitate toward the center.

The special discs, called disc stacks, quicken the separation process by increasing the surface settling area. The type of feed dictates the disc design, arrangement, and shape used for the procedure. Afterward, the disc stack centrifuge's design dictates whether the concentrated, denser solid or liquid is removed continuously, intermittently, or manually. Clearing liquids with low concentrations of suspended solids is a breeze with this disc stack centrifuge.

How a Disc Stack Centrifuge Works

There are many different kinds of separation technologies. The centrifugation process, which separates solids and liquids into their component phases according to density differences, uses a disc stack separator, often called a disc centrifuge. Disc stack separators function similarly to settling tanks, separating liquids and solids based on their densities utilizing the law of gravity. Centrifugal separators use mechanical force to separate solids and liquids of different densities from each other, in contrast to settling tanks that primarily use retention time to layer solids and liquids of different densities and allow them to precipitate into the tank.

Disc stack separators are settling tanks with bases that wrap around the bowl's center line. By rapidly spinning the separator bowl, an artificial gravitational force called G-force is created, which can be controlled and has an effect up to 10,000 times stronger than gravity. Then, with the help of G-force, solids and liquids can be swiftly and accurately separated in an easy-to-control manner. A disc stack greatly increases the separator bowl's separation area, leading to higher separation efficiency. Thus, the separation process with a centrifugal separator happens much more quickly, and the quality and yield are also much better.

The solids' volume in the specific application determines the removal method, which can be continuous, intermittent, or manual, depending on how the solids concentrate at the bowl's edge. Increasing the separation efficiency, the bowl is lined with conical plates stacked on each other. This creates a larger surface area for separation. Bowl disc stacks are a great way to hasten the process of solids-to-liquid separation.

Disc Stack Centrifuge Process Features

Efficient Performance

The mission of this SEPARATION is to produce affordable, high-quality goods. Our processing workshop can consistently produce high-quality separators because of our investment in state-of-the-art, high-quality processing equipment. This high-efficiency disc stack centrifuge is capable of stable and efficient operation in both standalone and modular configurations, and it has a remarkable separation factor of up to 14,500G.

Presence Of Corrosive Ions

Considering the potential presence of corrosive ions or substances in some separated materials, we choose materials with exceptional corrosion resistance and high strength to guarantee the separator's stability and longevity. Some examples of stainless steel are high-strength Cr-Ni-Mn, AISI 316, AISI 316L, and AISI 321 and 321L. So that the separator works as intended, we will rationally choose these materials according to the properties of the substances.

Automated cleaning

This disc stack centrifuge's control system has a built-in cleaning program to automatically clean the machine hood and drum. In this way, we can be sure that every mechanical cleaning is done to the best of our abilities without letting human error compromise the results. Because it satisfies both CIP/SIP and GMP standards, this cleaning system is ideal for use in the biopharmaceutical industry.

Application of Disc Stack Centrifuge

One common piece of centrifugal separation equipment that finds widespread use is the disc stack centrifuge. Applications in biotechnology, environmental science, food processing, pharmaceutical R&D, and other related fields benefit from its ability to separate and purify various components effectively. You can get a Reliable and quick separation with This disc stack separator.

Oil Extraction

It is used to extract oils from plants such as rapeseed, cottonseed, maize, palm, soybean, peanut, sunflower, pepper, rice bran, sesame, safflower, etc. It also helps extract animal oils from fish, fat, etc.

Food and Beverage Industry

It is used for Food and Drink dairy milk from goat, camel, and other dairy product purification; fat and liquid milk removal; fruit and vegetable juice extraction; tea, coffee, beer, and other alcoholic beverage production; and so on.

Biological Fermentation

Helps in fermentation by extraction, antibiotics, microorganism concentration, hormones, vitamins, and E. coli and antibiotic extracts. Fermented liquid concentration and clarification.

Chemical Industry

The purification and regeneration of industrial oils, including hydraulic guide rail oil, mold release agent, oil film bearing oil, grinding fluid, rotor sealing oil, and many more, as well as surface cleaning agents, polishing fluids, quenching fluids, and cutting fluids, are concerns related to industrial environmental protection.

Mineral Oil for Ships

Marine diesel engine fuel, including hydraulic oil, heavy diesel oil, low flow oil, light diesel oil, lubricating oil, and other oil series, is dried and refined to remove mechanical and moisture impurities.

Advantages of Disc Stack Centrifuge

Size of Particles Efficiency

In contrast to other centrifuges, which can only separate particles bigger than 50 microns, disc centrifuges can separate particles as tiny as 1 micron. Disc centrifuges can separate significantly smaller particles than decanters due to their higher g-force (~7,000 Gs) than decanters' lower g-force (~3,000 Gs). If you need to remove very small particles for polishing purposes, a disc centrifuge is your best bet because of its superior particle size efficiency compared to a decanter centrifuge.

Liquid Separation

Immiscible liquids can be easily separated using a stack disc centrifuge due to their high g-force. Tricanters are three-phase decanters but can't distinguish between liquids with the same specific gravity. Liquids with similar specific gravities can still be separated using the disc centrifuge. Once more, the specific gravities of the liquids to be separated must be very different for certain decanter centrifuges to work.

Sludge Dryness Adjustment

Changing the relative humidity of the separated solids in a decanter centrifuge while running is impractical. Nevertheless, a disc-stack centrifuge does allow for the adjustment of sludge dryness. Stop the other centrifuges and adjust the pond depth to change the cake's dryness. Changing the sludge moisture content in a disc centrifuge while running is as simple as adjusting the ejection cycle frequency.

Space Efficiency

The former has a more compact footprint when comparing disc centrifuges with other centrifuges of the same capacity. Disc centrifuges are space-efficient and can fit into small spaces. This capability is very useful when fitting a centrifuge into an existing facility. It would be more challenging to accommodate a decanter in the same setting.
